VISTAs participate in NeighborWorks Week

VISTA Brent Beane, who is in his second year with Montgomery Housing Partnership, Inc. (MHP), recently coordinated a neighborhood cleanup in the Glenville Rd. neighborhood of Silver Spring, MD. Held on June 4, this event kicked off NeighborWorks Week and was participated by roughly 50 residents and non-resident volunteers. In addition to picking up trash and salvaging recyclable items, they also planted flowers and delivered recycling bins to residents. His VISTA site-mate, Naudy Martinez, and several AmeriCorps State and National Volunteers from Montgomery County, MD’s Project Change helped out with the effort as well. In total, they collected 800 pounds of trash and recycled hundreds of bottles and cans. Several hundred flowers, which were donated by a local landscaping company whose owner and staff also donated their time in helping with the planting, were also planted on a total of five separate properties. The event was especially successful in galvanizing youth interest in neighborhood improvement, as can be seen by the quantity of youth volunteers in the photos.
