The Washington Monument is the most prominent site in Washington. It was built in honor of President George Washington who led the country to independence and then became its first President. The Monument is shaped like an Egyptian obelisk, 555 feet and 5 and 1/8 inches high, and averages 30 to 40 miles visibility in clear weather. It was completed on December 6, 1884.

Operational Hours:
Summer hours are from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily (last tour at 9:00PM) daily until Labor Day. Winter hours are from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily (last tour at 4:30PM), 7 days a week. The only days scheduled for closure are on July 4th December 25th

The book store is operated by Eastern National, a partner of the National Park Service that sells books and other educational materials. Proceeds from sales support park programs and visitor services.
